In the city, come summer, maintaining that ‘get up and go’ attitude can be a toughie when faced with an onslaught of brutal temperatures and a commute ahead of any adventure outdoors.
Whether you’re heading to work or meeting a friend, having something cold and with a little caffeine in it can help keep the spirits up and prevent that sort of mid-afternoon drowsiness that sucks the liveliness out of a person.
Enter in Vietnamese iced coffee. A cold coffee cools down the body and the caffeine in it increases your level of focus and concentration, keeping you engaged in some pretty challenging summertime conditions at times.
What Is Vietnamese Iced Coffee?
This isn’t your average cold coffee from Tim Hortons. At Toronto Pho, we do it a little different. We’ve taken iced coffee, twisted and turned it, and converted it into a slushie, aka the Va Va Viet. You will love it! You won’t be able to stop sipping and slurping up this delicious drink throughout the day, and it’ll keep you totally refreshed.
Toronto Pho isn’t a brand that’s known for our cold offerings. We’re more recognized for our varieties of hot pho. Though super-delicious and definitely a runaway hit at dinnertime, not everyone wants a bowl of pho in July or August. Have you ever tried eating pho in a takeout container while riding the TTC – sheesh, no thank you! It’s spills-town, galore.
No, you want something you can carry with you and that’s not going to be much of a fuss. Passionate coffee drinkers who still insist on holding onto their coffees this summer, try an iced coffee Vietnamese-style. Our Va Va Viet is the best Vietnamese iced coffee in Toronto, a new specialty we’re happy to be able to provide in these celebratory times as the city continues its reopening.
Maybe you aren’t a Vietnamese coffee slushie kind of person though. Hey, no worries. Not everyone has the same tastes. For Vietnamese cuisine lovers looking for something a little sophisticated in their cups, Toronto Pho offers up coconut coffee, white coffee, and Thai iced coffee. All are amazing summer-ready cold beverages that’ll knock your taste buds silly with aromatic, deep, stimulating flavor.
Of course, if you’re stopping in on our patio this summer, don’t hesitate to try our classic Vietnamese iced coffee. For the traditionalist or those looking for a low-calorie iced coffee exclusive of the sugars or added ingredients found in other beverages.
Where Does Vietnamese Iced Coffee Come From?
Coffee isn’t a drink native to Vietnam. It was first brought there by the French in the late 1850s. Coffea Arabica trees began to grow there shortly after and it was only in the 1980s that Vietnamese coffee grew to be an import here in North America.
Since then, dozens of coffee farms have come to exist in Vietnam and they’ve become the second-largest producer of coffee worldwide. The only bad thing about producing so much coffee is it’s often so hot in Vietnam! This naturally led to creating a colder version. The more traditional ‘iced coffee’ was arrived at.
Toronto has a long history of fusion foods, mixing culture with culture and producing some extraordinary beverages and dishes as a result. This is what led us at Toronto Pho in turning ‘traditional’ into ‘trendy’ with Vietnamese iced coffee. The result, the Va Va Viet, is a slushie equipped with the best iced coffee has to offer with something new and refreshing.
You get much of the same benefits between regular coffee and the Va Va Viet – plus a few extras.
There is no difference in caffeine content. The Va Va Viet is easier on the stomach and, due to the water content, less acidic and less bitter compared to hot-brewed coffee. Regular coffee dehydrates. The Va Va Viet counterbalances this with more water and hydration. This is so important during summer when dehydration is more common.
The Va Va Viet slushie makes for another great Toronto fusion, inspired by iced coffee. It is THE beverage to get this summer and our tribute to Toronto, from us to the customer. You will be craving your next one at the finish of a cup, we’re sure!
