What plastic is banned in Canada?
On Dec. 20, many products - like checkout bags, cutlery, takeout containers and stir sticks – will be banned. Not only that but come December 2023, their sale will cease.
With the plans to initiate the prohibition by late 2021, The federal government postponed it until 2022 and published regulations in June.
To create a society with zero plastic waste by 2030, the federal government is taking strides in curbing the detrimental effects plastics have on our environment, such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Starting Dec. 20, here is a selection of products that will no longer be accessible in Canada due to the single-use plastics ban:
Are plastic Checkout bags banned in Ontario?
Checkout bags, constructed entirely or partially of plastic, used to transport purchased goods from a store will be prohibited from manufacture and import for sale as of Dec. 20.
Additionally, fabric bags that don't pass the stress test - this entails being able to hold 10 kilograms over 53 metres 100 times without breaking or tearing when washed - are also subject to the ban.
Is plastic cutlery banned in Ontario?
Yes, to reduce plastic pollution, single-use cutlery of polystyrene or polyethylene construction is not allowed. This includes knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks that will change their form when put in the dishwasher 100 times or more.
Are takeout containers banned in Ontario?
Forbidding single-use plastic containers is the new rule, including but not limited to clamshells, lidded boxes, cups, plates, and bowls which are all partially or entirely made from plastic and intended for consuming on-the-go food or drinks.
If the products contain expanded or extruded polystyrene foam (also known as Styrofoam), polyvinyl chloride, carbon black or oxo-degradable plastic components, these items will be prohibited from sale. Additionally, food containers with transparent lids made of black plastic also fall under this ban.
Are plastic stir sticks banned in Ontario?
To protect our environment, the federal government has issued a regulation to prohibit all forms of plastic stir-sticks used to mix or hold beverages.
Are plastic straws banned in Ontario?
This new prohibition prohibits rigid and flexible straws that come with beverages, such as juice boxes or pouches, to protect our environment. In addition, the ban is applicable to any straws made of polystyrene or polyethylene, as well as those that can't be cleaned at least 100 times in a dishwasher.
For those with disabilities, single-use plastic flexible straws are excluded under certain conditions.
For example, a retail store may sell packages of twenty or more single-use single-use plastic flexible straws to customers upon request if the box is not displayed in public view.
Retailers can also offer beverage containers with these straws for an additional two years.
On Dec. 20, 2020, the manufacturing and importing of five categories of single-use plastics into Canada became law. A ban on selling these products will commence by Dec. 20, 2023, while a prohibition on producing, importing and exporting these plastics is scheduled to take place on Dec. 20, 2025. Effective Jun. 20, 2023, it will no longer be permissible to manufacture or import for sale in Canada and ring carriers (i.e., six-pack rings). The sales of such items will be abolished by Jun. 20, 2024, while their production, importing and selling for export purposes are completely prohibited as of Dec. 20, 2025.
What Does TorontoPHO offer?
For the past two years, Toronto Pho has stayed true to our commitment to going green and doing all we can to reduce our ecological footprint. Even when faced with financial losses due to COVID-19 restrictions and an unfortunate burglary - we still fought hard for sustainability! Even when shipping costs skyrocketed and our shipments were consistently late, resulting in additional fees to keep some of the packagings, we stayed true to our promise. It was more critical for us to complete this task than it was to agonize over the issues that had arisen.
We are thrilled to be part of a restaurant industry that follows suit and makes strides towards sustainable practices. Our packaging is biodegradable, making us more eco-friendly than ever.
